Key idea
"Bury College’s original project proposal – ‘using individual learning plans to support the progress of trainee teachers in the learning and skills sector’ – was designed to promote and support much-needed development work in the area of individual planning within initial teacher training.

Our goal was to develop and implement a framework and procedures which would enable teacher trainee applicants to identify their career aims, plan the most appropriate course of action and track their progress towards their goals.

It provided us with an opportunity to try out an approach and to develop a framework and documentation that would facilitate the process."

The implementation of the ITT Phase 2 Pilot Project coincided with other changes and developments at Bury College, including the review and refinement of classroom observation and performance review procedures. The review was extensive, involving middle and senior managers in a process designed to improve the quality of teaching and learning by bringing existing quality assurance and continuing professional development (CPD) activities more closely together.

As the review progressed, the pilot project provided a catalyst for discussions leading to the establishment of a Professional Development Steering Group, led by the Director of Human Resources and comprising the CPD Manager, the Quality Manager, the Curriculum Manager for Foundation Studies for Further Education (in which department teacher education is located) and the Acting Programmes Manager for Teacher Education (now formally appointed as Programmes Manager for the Essential and Professional Skills Unit). Meetings of the group clarified existing practice and identified key areas for development. The outcomes are described on the following screen.
