About Us
The University of Sunderland has long experience of delivering initial teacher training (ITT) to a range of learners, as the result of partnerships with many training providers in the region. The university provides high-level academic understanding of the nature of teacher training from individuals who deliver programmes at many levels. Within the School of Education and Lifelong Learning there is significant expertise of evaluation and research in the post-compulsory sector. The University of Sunderland has worked in partnership with Gateshead College and East Durham and Houghall Community College in delivery of their franchised Certificate in Education/Professional Certificate in Education (PCET) programmes for 10 years.
Gateshead College, as a general further education (FE) college, provides a variety of learning contexts for those involved in the pilot and attracts trainee teachers from a wide variety of curriculum and vocational areas. Traditionally it has a reputation for high-quality engineering provision - the college currently has Centre of Vocational Excellence (CoVE) status in motor vehicle engineering. The college has many links with employers and the local community and has successfully provided ITT through a franchise arrangement with the University of Sunderland for many years.
East Durham and Houghall College (EDHCC) is an FE college that provides a highly specialised curriculum and a distinctive range of courses: the college has a significant 14-16 curriculum and a large workforce development faculty, which successfully engages learners in the workplace; many more adults are engaged in part-time college-based provision.
