Oxford Brookes University
About Us
Our project consortium consists of a network of initial teacher training (ITT) providers in Oxfordshire, Bedfordshire, Berkshire and Wiltshire. The members of the consortium are linked in a partnership with Westminster Institute of Education at Oxford Brookes University. The institute was formed in 2000 as the result of a merger of Oxford Brookes University’s School of Education with Westminster College, both of which have a long and proud tradition of delivering teacher education.
The consortium has strong links with further education and sixth-form colleges, as well as adult and community learning (ACL), work-based learning (WBL) and prison education providers in the surrounding region; the majority of students on the part-time PGCE/CertEd course are drawn from these institutions. We developed a full-time PGCE (PCET - post-compulsory education and training) course in 1999, which now has 40 students who undertake placements and receive mentoring support at the institute’s partner colleges.
"We wanted to find out which strategies and mechanisms would offer the most effective means of supporting the initial and continuing professional development (CPD) of teachers in the learning and skills sector. Our investigation focused on the use of individual learning plans (ILPs) and how these could be carried forward into professional development portfolios (PDPs). As part of this investigation, we also considered the use of information and learning technology (ILT) to support the development of subject-specialist communities of practice."
