About Us

The School of Health, Community and Education Studies (HCES) at Northumbria University offers students a diverse range of programmes, the majority of which are vocational, preparing students for careers in the caring and enabling professions. The school - which, with approximately 6,500 students and 400 staff, is the largest of the schools within the university - is located at Coach Lane Campus, which lies three miles from the main City Campus in the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne.

The individual learning plan (ILP) project was carried out by the school’s post-compulsory education and training (PCET) provision, which is one of the three education programme areas.

PCET is responsible for:

  • initial teacher training (ITT) for the post-16 sector, the FENTO-endorsed PGCE (level 6) and Certificate in Education (CertEd) (level 5) in Post Compulsory Education and Training (PCET)

  • the FENTO-endorsed Certificate for Adult Literacy Subject Specialists (level 4)

  • the FENTO-endorsed Certificate for Adult Numeracy Subject Specialists (level 4)

  • BA (Hons) PCET (level 6), a continuing professional development (CPD) programme for holders of a CertEd (PCET).

"The ILP project aimed to work in partnership with a wide range of organisations from the learning and skills sector in order to investigate how ILPs are developed and reviewed for trainees who participate in post-16 ITT programmes at Northumbria University."
