About Us

Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) is a modern university with over 30,000 students on more than 400 courses. Approximately half the students are mature students, many from non-traditional backgrounds. The university's ‘strategic plan’ testifies to a commitment to widening participation, which sits well with the provision of training for teachers in the post-compulsory sector with its wide range of learners from different backgrounds.

The university’s Institute of Education is a leading UK centre for educational research and study; it is the major provider of initial teacher education and training (ITT) and continuing professional development (CPD) in the North West and is one of the largest teacher education establishments in the country. Teacher Education is delivered to full-time students in-house, and to serving teachers in nine partner colleges on a franchise basis. These partner colleges provide teacher training to participants in further education (FE), adult and community learning (ACL) and work-based learning (WBL) settings. In the last research assessment exercise (RAE), the institute received the highest grading of any of the new universities, demonstrating that it has the expertise to administer and evaluate this pilot.

"Our primary aims in the study included contextualising learning for those involved in work-based delivery and responding to the ‘student voice’ by putting six strategies in place that were designed to make closer links between theory and work-based practice."
