About Us

Lewisham College is a large inner-city general further education college situated in south-east London. There are 36,000 learners enrolled, with an average age of 30, of whom 59% are Black and Minority Ethnic (BME). The college serves the borough of Lewisham mainly (from where 42% of its learners come), but also Southwark (13% of its learners) and Greenwich (12%). The majority of learners (71%) are enrolled on vocational courses at Levels 2 to 4, with the remainder mainly attending a range of Entry or Level 1 programmes.

The college delivers the Certificate in Education as part of the Canterbury Christ Church University consortium. During the past five years, the majority of trainees have been the college’s own employees, full-time or part-time permanent staff and hourly paid ‘visiting tutors’ (VTs) engaged through private agencies. The remainder of trainees have come from a range of Learning and Skills Council (LSC), local authority, charity and privately funded educational and training organisations. A small number of trainees are employed as hourly paid VTs in neighbouring FE colleges: Southwark College, Newham College, Greenwich Community College and Lambeth College. The annual first-year intake averages around 60.

Over 90% of the tutors who are permanently employed at Lewisham College now hold teaching qualifications. There is a growing shift in annual recruitment towards hourly paid, agency staff and trainees employed in small independent providers of education and training. Candidates may teach anything from two hours a week to 30 hours or more. The range and quality of workplace experience, support and training that they may receive is also varied.

"Our ambition was to begin to act as the hub of a local network of providers who employ trainee teachers. In line with this, we wanted to design, test and refine an individual learning plan (ILP) process that would provide solutions to ‘capacity problems’ facing smaller providers and offer opportunities for continuing professional development (CPD) to all trainees through Lewisham College’s own CPD programme."
