About Us

The Department of Post Compulsory Education at Canterbury Christ Church University has a long established Initial Teacher Education (ITE) consortium comprising seven local further education (FE)  colleges, through which both an in-service part-time Cert Ed and a pre-service full-time PGCE are delivered.  The total number of students on the pre-service programme is 60 per year, and on the in-service over 1,000 per year.  Our   programmes are designed and delivered to meet the needs of teachers working across the complete range of the post compulsory sector.  Although the majority of trainees are working in, or are planning to work in FE, the consortium includes large numbers of trainees from the Police, and Adult Education, in particular.  Throughout the twelve year life of the Certificate in  Education (Cert Ed) programme the department has often been affirmed in its ability to embed theoretical knowledge into practically based professional assignments, and in the light of the recent reviews of post compulsory education we are keen to enhance further our good practice in this area.  We worked on two projects; observation and ILPs

Observation

"We wanted to test ways of extending supervised teaching experience (STE) visits with trainee teachers through the development of specific criteria for determining a pass or fail together with an enhanced process that included pre-visits for supporting session planning and a post-visit evaluation"

ILPs

"Through our project we wanted all personnel involved with the ITE  programme to ‘use’ the ILP in some way and we wanted it to be a central means by which trainees engaged with the core educational pedagogy of the programme.  We wanted to explore ways in which the ILP might become one of the main means by which a coherent learning and development programme is established for trainee teachers, encompassing work with the ITE tutor, the mentor and the human resources (HR) department."
