Nottingham Trent University - The Signposts to Success Consortium - Case Study - continued

We wanted to produce an on-line ILP for our in-service courses that would build on an existing paper-based ILP that has been seen as effective by Ofsted. The VLE was already in use and ILT already firmly embedded in the course. The on-line ILP was an essential ‘next step’.
It is designed to support trainees from the start of the course by:
- identifying and recording existing skills (transferable and literacy/numeracy)
- building up a detailed record of progress on the course
- allowing on-line tutor feedback
- including detailed action plans.
The ILP, which was created by an IT consultant in close consultation with course tutors, provides a recording and monitoring function on the course. It is seen as a valuable resource for tutors and trainees.

Cheryl, a student, is using her on-line ILP when John, a fellow-student, comes in looking worried. He has forgotten, indeed may even have lost, his paper ILP.
Cheryl definitely prefers it to the paper-ILP because she can look at it from home . . . on holiday(?!) . . . wherever she can get internet access. There is no carrying around of pieces of paper and she can’t lose it. The online ILP is:

Our findings
The ILP pilot has created increased opportunities for formalised contact between tutor and student and the creation of an action plan which builds up throughout the course, showing development and progress in learning. The ILP as it exists at the moment is seen as a starting point for continued development as the new standards are introduced and new qualifications are developed.
