Background Information and Context

The individual learning plan (ILP) project was carried out by the Post-Compulsory Education and Training (PCET) programme team at Northumbria University.

The PCET programme team is small but is supplemented with visiting lecturers (subject specialists) who carry out workplace observations of teaching practice and provide additional teaching support. The programmes we offer attract approximately 230 students each year, from a wide geographical area, from the Scottish borders (some 50 miles to the north), to Durham in the south (about 25 miles) and across to the Cumbria–Northumberland border (about 60 miles) to the west.

All the provision is part-time and delivered predominantly on an evening basis. Many of the programme tutors teach across the teacher education provision. The programmes, wherever possible, use a common format of processes and products, so a ‘Review of progress’ document would be used by all staff on each programme.

Key idea

"The ILP project aimed to work in partnership with a wide range of learning and skills sector organisations in order to investigate how ILPs are developed and reviewed for trainees who participate in post-16 initial teacher training (ITT) programmes at Northumbria University."
